Dorset Music Service (DMS) is the main provider of musical tuition within Dorset, Poole and Bournemouth Schools and also runs county groups, ensembles and music centres. It is committed to providing all kinds of instrument playing and musical opportunities at the highest practicable level, to as many young people in the county as possible. DMS receives a core grant from Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole though its main source of funding is income generated. At present, DMS is delivering KS2 Wider Opportunities programmes in all Dorset Primary Schools and many in Bournemouth and Poole, at the behest of SoundStorm. SoundStorm is affiliated with DMS and collaborates on a range of projects.
CONCERTS
DMS puts on an annual Children's Concert showcasing talent from across Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole. These take place at major venues, including Bournemouth International Centre, Lighthouse (Poole) and the Royal Albert Hall. 2007's 'Dorset Rocks' concert sold out the famous London venue and was universally acclaimed.
INSTRUMENTAL TUITION
DMS provides peripatetic instrumental tuition on a huge range of instruments, many of which are not provided by private providers in this region. Individual lessons or group tuition are available, as determined by schools and parents. Work is linked to the National Curriculum and strong support is given to pupils to contribute to schools' own musical activities.
Tuition is available on:
· Woodwind - flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, recorder, saxophone
· Brass - trumpet, cornet, tenor horn, French horn, trombone, baritone, euphonium, tuba
· Strings - guitar, violin, viola, 'cello, double bass
· Keyboard/piano
· Percussion
· Voice
COUNTY GROUPS AND ENSEMBLES
DMS currently runs seven county groups. Entry is open to all school age musicians who attend a Dorset, Poole or Bournemouth school or live in the county of Dorset. These groups meet less frequently than the weekly music centre ensembles and it is an opportunity to meet and play with like-minded musicians from right across the county.
Entry for all groups, with the exception of the Dorset Youth Junior String Orchestra, is by audition.
County group membership benefits include:
- Public concerts in professional venues
- Participation in competitions and festivals
- Residential courses
- Coaching by professional musicians, both local, and from further afield
- Tours in the UK and abroad
MUSIC CENTRES
DMS currently runs two music centres, one in the east and one in the west of Dorset. Music centres offer musicians of all ages the opportunity to rehearse and perform as part of an ensemble on a regular basis, supplementing their individual lessons. The centres enrich and support the young musical community and offer a wider musical experience.
Rehearsals take place on a weekly basis during term time and members are given the opportunity to perform in public concerts, events and sometimes workshops. Membership of any music centre entitles students to participate in as many ensembles within that centre as they wish at no additional cost.
DMS provides a range of other services, including instrumental hire and much more.
